The writing does much better with Sebastian’s crisis of protection and sanity, fighting the creature temptation while working through all that’s been lost during the past year, contributing to the script’s theme of trauma and how all the characters deal with such pain. “Barcelona” does have plenty of screen activity, with chases, hunts, and battles to fill the feature, eventually reaching a more active climax as the path to a potential safe zone is blocked by all kinds of enemies. “Bird Box Barcelona” isn’t as effective as the original film, losing some enigmatic power as the helmers are seemingly under orders to keep the franchise afloat, trying to generate new challenges and discoveries to carry into future sequels/spin-offs. A vision of the future doesn’t really match the blind panic of the tale, but this second at-bat is involving in its own way, going spiritual and deranged to restart the “Bird Box” engine.
